How does SpeechEasy work?

SpeechEasy fluency devices are based on a natural phenomenon called the "Choral effect". The choral effect occurs when a person's stutter is dramatically reduced or even eliminated when they speak or sing in unison with others. This choral effect has been well documented for decades. However, it is only recently that scientist have been able to re-create it in a small, wearable device that can be used in everyday life.

How does SpeechEasy work?

Several different devices have been developed based on knowledge of the Choral effect. SpeechEasy is the first device to incorporate this effect in a small, wearable device. The device combines two technologies to produce the Choral effect. These are DAF (Delayed Auditory Feedback) and FAF (Frequency Altered Feedback). Someone who speaks while using the SpeechEasy device will hear his/her words with a small delay and a modified frequency. The result is that the brain perceives the stammerer as speaking in unison with other people.

  • FAF: The frequency of the signal produced by the device is modified (e.g. your voice sounds higher).
  • DAF: The signal produced by the device is delayed. You hear your own voice with a small delay (the Choral effect).
